Courtesy of Apple MusicBrandy and Monica were every bit of deserving of the 1.2 million viewers that tuned in during Monday night’s record-breaking Verzuz battle.
To kick off the highly-anticipated evening, Democratic vice presidential candidate Senator Kamala Harris virtually dropped in for a surprise appearance on the screen behind them, mentioning the battle’s merchandise line.
“I just wanted to thank you, ladies, you queens, you stars, you icons. Thank you for doing this,” Kamala said. “It’s so important for everyone. You both have used your voice in such a powerful way. I know this is going to help Michelle Obama‘s When We All Vote.”
“We understand the importance of people getting out and voting right now,” Monica added. “And they feel so helpless right now, but that’s how you help yourself, help your community, help your brothers and sisters.”
Smiling ear to ear, Brandy enthusiastically added, “I’m fangirling right now.”
Brandy recited a few poems between playing classics such as “What About Us?, “Full Moon,” “I Wanna Be Down,” 90’s breakup anthem “Brokenhearted,” featuring Wanya Morris from Boyz II Men, and “Talk About Love,” featuring Kanye West.
From her latest album, B7, Brandy played “Borderline” and her Daniel Caesar collaboration, “Love Again.”
Meanwhile, Monica played hits like “A Dozen Roses,” “So Gone,” “U Should’ve Known Better,” “Why I Love You So Much,” and her 2019 single, “Commitment,” which landed at #1 on the Billboard’s Adult Songs Airplay chart.
Brandy and Monica also paid tribute to the recent passing of Chadwick Boseman and many other influential celebrities we’ve lost in the last decade, before Brandy played “Missing You,” featuring Chaka Khan, Tamia and Gladys Knight.
The song was also dedicated to Kobe Bryant, his daughter, Gianna, Nipsey Hussle, songwriter Lashawn Daniels, Whitney Houston, and Michael Jackson.
